Children and poetry are a natural fit. They rhythm and language of poetry makes it perfect for reading aloud to your child. Children's poetry is silly and fun, and a book of children's poetry will be a favorite at bedtime or anytime. Don't underestimate your child's ability to respond to more serious poetry also. A brief poem will teach a child to relate words and feelings more quickly than will a narrative or story. To introduce your child to the world of poetry, your first stop should be the bookstore. Pick a book that has a variety of children's poetry. Poems are quick reading, and you'll want a good selection to find your child's favorites.
Then, take the next step to teach your child to memorize poetry. It's a great learning and memory-building technique, and your child will feel a sense of accomplishment reciting the poetry. In our town, we have an 'Open Mic' night at a local restaurant. Along with the musical performances, adults and children recite both original and memorized poetry. It's always a magical evening for everyone. You can incorporate this at home also. If you plan a Family Performance Night, let your non-singers prepare to recite a favorite poem from memory.
