Tips for Parents

The plan is geared to two computer sessions of approximately one hour, or one long session each week. With less time, modify it to do the online activities only.

The plan includes many free printables from around the web, so purchase a simple school portfolio for each child. Printable activities require a color inkjet printer. Make sure you have plenty of toner and bright-white paper for your printer. You might also get a package of card stock.

Some additional supplies will allow children to use the computer to find something creative and fun to do off the computer. Playing cards are used in the math game activities. In week eight, use the card stock and good paper to make the books, or see the simple supplies for each "Make a Book" suggestion.

Kids will need to use a word processing document for the "My Favorites..." assignments. Many children are handy with word processing, but if some are not, create the documents before you start. With some children, you might need to spend time during the first week teaching the Insert cursor position, Enter key, simple text formatting, and Cut, Copy and Paste. Children will also need to know how to save an image to the computer and insert it into a document. If you want to introduce word processing to your elementary child at home, I recommend purchasing Scholastic Keys [See Review]. Keys modifies your Microsoft Office programs for easy and fun kid use.
