Children and Health Insurance Coverage

Research Finding

From 1998 to 2003, the percent of U.S. children who were uninsured decreased from 13.2% to 10.2%. Examination of health insurance coverage by poverty status in shows that the percent of poor children and near poor children under 19 years of age who were uninsured decreased by approximately 25% from 1998 to 2003 (23% to 16%).

The Good News:

The U.S. Medicaid and State Child Health Insurance Programs (SCHIP) are reaching families to provide health insurance for children in the United States.
