Question
I teach Special Education for 5-8 graders in a small, rural, elementary school. This year my school is putting a lot of emphasis on reading. As a way to engage the parents of our school I have decided to use part of my allotted resource money on sending a letter to every parent in our school. The letter will be from my principal and it will inform the parents as to our reading goal this year and will also solicit their help. We will ask the parents to assist their children, at home, with their reading and also encourage their child to read more. I am searching for a piece of material that I can include in my letters that will give our parents some tips and helps in promoting reading at home. I have a limited budget, about $1 per parent for materials that I can purchase to include in the mailing. Can you suggest such a resource and how to order it? Thanks for your help.
Answer
Resources for Educators has a marvelous parent newsletter that you can purchase to send home to parents. The price is much less than $1 per parent and includes an entire year's worth of helpful newsletters for encouraging children's learning. They have several to choose from, but you might be interested in the Reading Connection - Intermediate Edition. It's geared to parents of older elementary children who must read to learn.
The subscription also includes free bonus issues on topics such as Vocabulary, Study Skills, and Standardized Test Secrets.
Our school district sent these newsletters and they are creative, easy to digest, and quite useful.
