Activities and Interests
At eight, personality characteristics of introversion and extraversion will affect the child's group activity interests. An introverted child may enjoy some limited group activity that is balanced with independent playtime. She often likes to read or play alone. The extraverted child will not be happy playing alone for long and she revels in group activities such as sports and games. Try to adapt the child's activity schedule to her personality and preferences, even if her style is different from your own.
While imaginative play is still enjoyed on occasion, either alone or with a best friend, eight's play is more structured and focused on creating something tangible or learning a new skill. Eight will especially enjoy craft, construction, and science projects, though he usually needs his parents' help. He will enjoy learning intermediate skills in his favorite sport or trying a new challenge, such as gymnastics, dance, swim team, or martial arts.
