Pack With the Kids
When we are packing for a family trip I like to get the kids involved by asking them to pack a small bag with some favorite toys and books. I also pack their favorite blankets and a few other familiar items they'll want to have when we are away from home. Encouraging the children to participate in preparing for a trip also gives you an opportunity to explain where you'll be going and where you'll be sleeping.Give Kids Personal Space
If we are staying at a hotel, I carve out some space in the room for the kids to use as a play area. When they have a chance to reconnect with the toys they packed for the trip it helps them to feel more comfortable in unfamiliar surroundings.Create a Familiar Bedtime Atmosphere
Whenever we travel I bring along a nightlight so everyone can find the bathroom if needed in the middle of the night. I also try to place a sippy cup with water on the hotel nightstand. Its just another comfort from home that will help limit anxiety for the children at bedtime.Recreate Bedtime Routines
Getting children to sleep can be a challenging task even at home. So we try to recreate our regular bedtime routine even when we are on the road. We'll read bedtime stories and prepare the beds with their favorite blankets and sleeping companions just like we do at home. If you are staying in hotel rooms it is usually pretty easy to make the room dark. Be sure to turn off distractions like the TV while trying to get the children to sleep. Ensuring that kids get enough sleep is bound to make your trip more enjoyable for everyone. In addition to bringing along familiar items from home, your calming and reassuring presence will surely help your children relax and enjoy the trip.
