Most people take steps to moderate their drinking. As we get older, we're not so often "looking for a party crowd", but a lot of us like to "have a few after work or on the weekend". Wise parents also learn to moderate the effects on their children. Here are some tips from parents:
- Don't drink around the children. Have your first after-work drink after they've gone to bed. This also helps cut down on the quantity of alcohol you are drinking daily.
- If you are having a party or occasion where you will be drinking, determine a "designated babysitter". It can be one of the parents, a friend, relative, or paid sitter. This person should stay sober and responsible to deal with the children's needs and their safety. Don't attempt to discipline your child when you are intoxicated. It's confusing to children and undermines their respect for you at the least. Much of the time, it's destructive and potentially dangerous.
- Learn to monitor and adjust your blood alcohol level. Use personal strategies to maintain moderation in your alcohol use. Some parents alternate alcohol with soft drinks or club soda to keep their blood alcohol levels in the pleasant, but functioning range. Driving with any alcohol in your system can be dangerous and should never be done with a child in the vehicle.
- Be honest with yourself and take action if your drinking is getting out of control. Score yourself on this confidential alcohol use screening. Take steps to reduce or eliminate your alcohol or drug use if you see that it is a problem.
