Ideas for Spring Family Fun

From , former About.com Guide

Spring weather wakes us from our winter doldrums and makes us want to get out and have some fun. While the trees are bare, we can see the beautiful blooming dogwood trees and the fields of daffodils. The brisk wind draws us to the park for kite-flying. The warm sun welcomes us into the garden and workshop for outdoor projects.

We just feel more energetic; the idea of throwing a party for our children actually seems like fun, not an impossible chore. The weather fools us though, we still have many indoor days to go. But on a glorious Spring day, we catch a glimpse of the fun before us and we just can't wait to get started.

Take a nature walk in the park or woods. If you can, bring home some rocks for these Rock and Roll Crafts from Kidz Korner. You can even use plain gravel for the gravel mosaic picture. Print the Family Nature Journal from National Wildlife Federation to record your finds on the nature walk. For a more scientific nature study, follow these Kidz Korner instructions for Springtime Observations using a string or coathanger.

Want to attract some birds to your yard? Ranger Rick has two ideas for making hummingbird feeders. You can learn bird songs with these resources from About Birding, and sit in the backyard and listen to begin to identify the birds in your neighborhood.

Get into gardening with your kids with this simple plan. You have another few weeks for pansies, so you might find some inexpensive ones at your garden center. Load them with fertilizer when you plant them, and then harvest the flowers for some pressed pansy projects from Martha Stewart. Find more nature and flower crafts from About Family Crafts.

Bring Spring to the family table with these ideas. Kids can create, print, and cut placecards for a holiday dinner or other special occasion. Use card stock paper and a spring graphic. Put four cards on a sheet and let your child write the names; cut and fold. Check out these family-friendly clipart links for flower, butterfly, and bunny graphics for your placecard project. Use pretty colors of felt to make simple flower napkin rings with the template and instructions from Enchanted Learning Software. Or, let Martha Stewart Living teach you how to fold napkins to make bunnies. Spring is the perfect time for a tea party. I loved these cute ideas for a Teddy Bear Tea Party from Old Fashioned Living.
