As your child begins to do more writing in school, she will be expected to learn how to write descriptive writing as one of the four most common types of writing. Descriptive writing creates a vivid picture of an idea, place, person or event. It is much like painting with words.
Descriptive writing contains:
- interesting, energetic and evocative words.
- a directed focus on the subject (no rambling detours).
- figurative and metaphorical language.
- a lot of detail.
Descriptive writing is used in:
- descriptions of fictional and non-fictional characters
- poetry
- parts of book reports
- observational writing
