Microsoft Encarta
It takes a lot to get me to pay for a web site; but I think Encarta may have finally convinced me. Kids in upper elementary and middle school can definitely use a good up-to-date encyclopedia, which Encarta Premium offers.
Say Boo to the Flu
This great public service site will help you locate a flu clinic in your area and gives advice for flu prevention, such as sneezing into your elbow rather than your hands. You'll also find a handwashing reward chart and the cinnamon demonstration to show the importance of soap when handwashing. Also, learn about good cleaning and disinfecting practices from Clorox.
The Imperfect Parent
Are you tired of trying to keep up with the parenting experts' advice on how to be the perfect parent? You're guaranteed to laugh at the humor and truth in the writings of these blogging parents.
Parents' Choice Foundation
The Parents' Choice Foundation web site is a great resource when you want to find high quality children's music, toys, software, books, DVDs, video games, and more. Founded by Diana Huss Green, the foundation reviews and recommends media products for children's learning and fun outside the classroom. This is a review site that is run with integrity and intelligence, not a "hot toys" site.
Kiddley
Kiddley is a great example of blogging at its best. The theme is creative fun for families and I always find something great to make or do here. The pictures and instructions make these projects accessible for busy parents; and the site is so well designed, it's a pleasure to browse. Claire Peterson writes this blog along with her popular craft blog, LoobyLu.com.
Protozone
My favorite online art games are featured at The National Gallery of Art's Kids' Art Zone. The creator of the art games, Protozone, is now offering expanded versions of their art games on CD-Rom for family art play on the home computer. We like art games because they are relaxing and creative pastimes on the computer. When you visit the site, peek around at the cool exhibits created by Protozone's Al Jarnow and James Metcalf.
B Equal Games
My family enjoys DVD games such as Scene-It, so we were interested in the DVD games from B Equal. What makes these games really special is the leveling technology that lets the whole family play the same game at their level. Add to that the learning value and the quality media from The History Channel and Discovery Channel.
Torah Tots
Torah Tots is a great site because it has a wealth of outstanding content along with its kid-friendly graphic appeal. Your kids will enjoy the games and coloring pages, and you will appreciate the stories and learning opportunities. Torah Tots has mini-sites for all the holidays, so make a visit during the days of Chanukah.
Sierra Trading Post
A shrewd shopper doesn't always share her favorite bargain shops with others. Competition for the best merchandise at rock-bottom prices can get rough you know. But, I'm feeling generous this year, so I'll tell you about Sierra Trading Post. Sierra sells sports apparel for men, women, and kids, and it's the perfect place to stock up on winter clothing for yourself and your kids. You'll find excellent brands and rarely pay more than 50% retail for them. So, go on over and check it out; but don't tell anyone else about it!
Sadlier-Oxford Educational Publishing
The web site for Sadlier-Oxford Educational Publishing offers extensive online student activities in Mathematics, Vocabulary Workshop, Phonics and Word Study, Grammar for Writing, and Content-Area Readers. Use the online catalog to find workbooks and extension materials that parents can order to enrich elementary learning at home. You'll also find helpful articles on elementary education and a student center with enrichment activities geared to your child's Sadlier-Oxford textbook. This is a great example of how the web can be used to integrate school and home to enhance elementary learning.
