I was late for a meeting this busy week. I needed something for note taking; so I grabbed a few sheets of paper from the printer tray as I flew out the door to make it on time. During the meeting I noticed that the man next to me was using the same paper - from his printer tray, no doubt!
You see, I am a compulsive note taker and list maker. I write to understand what I hear and to remember all the balls I am juggling. That doesn't mean some don't fall on my head still, but written organization keeps me sane most days.
Usually, I have a notebook or folder for my various projects, but this day reminded me of a visual organization strategy that I use on the days when I have way too much to do for my work, family, and community obligations.
A Folded Sheet of Paper
It's amazing what you can accomplish with a folded sheet of paper from your printer tray. I learned this trick from my friend and mentor in school psychology. Instead of one daunting list of to-do's for the day, you break them into categories that seem much more manageable on the four pages of your folded sheet of paper.
Mine usually break down into: Page 1) Work tasks and all appointments; Page 2) Materials and information needed to accomplish Page 1; Page 3) Child and home to-do's; and Page 4) Shopping list.
I carry that folded sheet of paper in my purse, my briefcase, my car, or my pocket; and scribble new notes and mark off items as they are accomplished. At the end of the day, I can see that all the numerous tasks for the day are marked off; so I throw the paper in the trash and rest my weary self with the satisfaction of a busy day done.
