The Last Two Months of the School Year, or Parenting on Auto-Pilot

From , former About.com Guide

I'm not one of those super-organized parents, far from it in fact. But over time, I've learned family organizing strategies from my mother, friends, extended family, mentors, and favorite authors. I've tried many systems for organizing our busy family life and the ones that stick are the ones that are the most simple. A nice calendar that fits in my purse and a wall calendar for the kitchen, Outlook, an updated contact list on my phone and computer, family meetings, and an occasional written directive from the queen (me, of course) to delegate family tasks; that's basically it.

But, as the last two months of the school year approach, I am thankful for these simple organizing structures to get through a time of school doldrums and the anticipation of summer. Frankly, I'm ready for summer too; and that puts me in a harried mood. (Bet I know more than a few schoolteachers like that also.)

So tonight, we're getting out the calendars to pencil in all of our end-of-year activities. My phone's contact list is ready for any emergency call during busy work hours. Tomorrow I call the school to schedule after-school tutoring. A royal directive is not yet required; instead, I think I'll get on the travel web sites and start summer dreaming with my kids.
