Playing House

by Kimberly L. Keith
for About.com

Playing 'house' is a universal activity for children. Even boys will play house if they aren't teased about it. The allure of playing house is because of the people! Your child's dolls and stuffed animals are her family and friends; and, you're invited too.

Start your child's collection of dolls and animals when she is young. Durable baby dolls and teddy bears will stay favorites for years. As your child gets older, more expensive dolls and animals are appropriate; though, you may need to keep some in a safe place to only play with carefully.

Dolls and animals need clothing and accessories, and this is where it gets fun. We like life-sized baby dolls so they can wear real baby clothes that you find at yard sales and thrift shops. Every year for Easter, I unpack my daughter's baby dresses for her collection of big bunny rabbits to wear.

You'll find lots of baby doll accessories such as strollers, high chairs, and beds in every price range. When your child gets older, she'll have less interest in baby doll play, but will still want to keep a bed for her first babies to live in.

Older children like older-looking dolls. Our favorites are Hopscotch Hill, American Girl, Only Hearts Club, and Fashion Fever Barbie. Splurge on a fashion wardrobe and furniture for these dolls. Dressing them is what girls like best; and, the furniture lets them play house well into the elementary years.
