Skills Kids Need to Begin Second Grade

  • Control talking during worktime and when the teacher is talking
  • Ability to work in a small group productively to accomplish projects or solve a problem
  • Fundamental reading skills including all phonics and basic sight words
  • Manuscript handwriting with proper spacing of words and complete sentences
  • Count and write numbers to 100 and perform addition and subtraction of numbers to 10
  • Use simple graphs and recognize simple fractions
  • Improved gross-motor and fine-motor coordination
  • Curiosity and interest in basic science explorations of animals, insects, rocks, dinosaurs, and other elementary science topics
  • Ability to converse about events in her world with adults and peers and to talk in front of a group of people
  • Ability to organize her belongings and school supplies to be prepared in the classroom
