What Fourth Graders Learn
- Improve reading skills through independent reading of a variety of children's literature - chapter books, myths and fables, non-fiction, poetry, plays
- Use critical thinking skills while reading by making inferences, predictions, and summarizing information
- Daily writing in a wide variety of formats - journals, poetry, fiction, information
- Writing on the computer using a word processing program
- Use research tools - dictionary, encyclopedia, library, internet to find information
- Write book reports and learn basic skills of report writing - outlining, contrast and comparison, paragraph construction
- Multiply large multi-digit numbers by two-digit numbers
- Divide multi-digit numbers by a single-digit number
- Geometry principles, including calculating area, perimeter, and measuring angles
- Add and subtract decimals and relate decimals and fractions
- Find simple averages
- Understand and solve a simple number sentence in algebra
- Collect data and create graphs, tables, and charts
- Apply science thinking skills of forming a hypothesis, making predictions, and gathering data in a simple science experiment
- Learn basic genetics and the life cycle of animals
- Learn about the earth
- Learn basic principles of matter and energy, including magnetism, electricity, and light
- Learn about the history and geography of their state
- Learn myths and legends from history
- Study American history people and events
- Learn about the cultures and customs of different countries in the world
Note to Parents...
Children, families, and schools vary so widely that it's possible only to state general guidelines for the skills needed to start the grade and those the child will learn in this grade. So, don't panic if your child or school doesn't match the list exactly. Just be aware of these skills and work on them with your child this year.
