Building Character

Nine-year olds have reached a level of self-organization in which positive emotions are most often felt. He shows more responsibility, independence, obedience, and ability to get along with others. Feelings of empathy and altruism are apparent in the child, and he is a good and devoted friend.

At nine, self-motivation is the primary characteristic that colors all of the child's behavior and emotions. A profound developmental change has taken place, though it may seem so subtle as to not be apparent. The nine year old can now think for himself and is quite self-sufficient. All of the developmental extremes of assertion and withdrawal from the younger years are now integrated in a stable self-identity. He has good self-control and can think about a problem and plan how to solve it. He is persistent in his efforts and can sustain hours of focus on a task.

Nine is developing a conscience. He recognizes when he has done wrong, but also when he has failed to do right. He will confess to his parents when he has done wrong, because his conscience bothers him until he does. He is somewhat less likely to try to blame or excuse his actions, but still uses these tactics when he is embarrassed or ashamed. Honesty, fairness, and truthfulness are important to the nine year old. He expects those qualities in himself and in others.

In contrast to age eight, nine year olds do not show a great interest in God and religion, and many do not want to go to church and Sunday School. They do have a basic ethical feeling and faith, however, and will pray to God when they are in need.
