Family story-reading nights are just right for weeknights. The only preparation required is a good book; and, early bedtimes come easily after a good story. When my children were little, we read a story every night before bed. With family story nights, you can venture into longer books, reading a few chapters each evening.
Don't be shy about reading to your older child. Sixth-grade teachers I know read books to their students all the time, and they will tell you that older kids love it! Build language skills and family bonds by choosing juvenile fiction that the whole family will love to read aloud.
A favorite first chapter book for preschoolers is A.A. Milne's The House on Pooh Corner. Everyone can relate to the 'bear of very little brain', and his adventures in the original book are related in beautiful language that is a joy to read.
For older kids, let them pick a favorite book. Or if they don't have any ideas, you can find great book recommendations from many sources online. Newbery Award books are can't miss choices for chapter reading. Our local school librarian recommends Hoot for older kids. Another favorite for boys is Brian's Winter. Jot down a few titles as your browse, and then visit your local library to try them for free. If you haven't been to your local library in a while, make a point to take the kids for an afternoon of choosing books for story night. Choose several, you never know what you'll be in the mood for.
