Your home computer is a powerful tool for enriching your child's elementary education. We use the Web to help with homework and to remediate my children's weak areas. I guess I just love a big project, because this month I am surfing the great Web resources for elementary education.

Educational Web sites are going through many changes. Consolidation and fee-based premium services are the trend. Larger sites target schools in their marketing of subscription services for using the Internet in education. These large sites, such as The Learning Network, Lightspan, and BigChalk, include student and parent services to bring home and school together through the computer. Cool idea, I think.

Surfing through the wealth of educational sites on the Web is a lot of fun, but it can be overwhelming. When I need to help my child with a homework project or solve a problem, I want to find something useful without spending hours searching. I have learned that we use certain tools regularly. These are the reference tools that I keep on my Internet start page. You can add them to yours to make your computer a quick learning and reference tool

Reference Tools

Merriam-Webster Online  Not sure of the spelling or definition? Make a quick click to check it.

Brittanica.com Cut to the chase at homework time with the familiar focus of this online encyclopedia. The information is deep so probably more appropriate for very good readers. The topic pages guide you to related web sites, magazine articles, images, and books for a deeper perspective.

Fact Monster Good research tool for younger elementary ages.

WebMath  If your child (and you!) are stumped by a math homework problem, enter it here to see the step-by-step solution.

Calculator.com This quick click brings up a colorful basic calculator with a tape feature.

Weather.com  You don't have to wait up for the 11:00 news. Get the details early so the kids can lay out their clothes in the evening. Personalize it to make it even more convenient.

Mapquest   Maps are fascinating and a great learning tool for kids.  Find road maps and a World Atlas.
