Online Book Buying for Parents

Dateline: 12/31/98

Now is the time to do something just for you. If you find inspiration in reading books on parenting, health, sex, self-help, finances, or any topic that is weighing on you as the year winds down, you can find anything you want on the Internet. Buying books online is a natural. Most Internet bookstores make it very easy for you plus you can read reviews or get recommendations. The book you want is sure to be in stock at one of the online booksellers and will be as easy as can be to find.

Amazon.com's Editors Picks for Parenting Books includes several that look good, or you can check out their best-selling parenting books for 1998. I see that one of my all time favorite books is still a best seller. If you haven't read it, don't miss How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk. Another best seller and deservedly so is the book for parents of ADD children, Driven to Distraction : Recognizing and Coping With Attention Deficit Disorder from Childhood Through Adulthood. A very interesting and helpful book on temperament in children and particularly parenting the temperamentally "intense" child is Raising Your Spirited Child : A Guide for Parents Whose Child Is More Intense, Sensitive, Perceptive, Persistent, and Energetic. You can also find some good books of  inspiration for the overwhelmed parent (I think that is all of us most of the time!) at Amazon.

Borders.com has a nice section on Family, Parenting & Education. Check out their new releases in the category. Two inspirational best sellers can be found here, Don't Sweat the Small Stuff with Your Family and Chicken Soup for the Mother's Soul.

You will find some great books about different parenting issues at these specialty sites. Some of these books are practical such as Love and Limits and some are inspirational such as Children Learn What They Live.

To bring the focus onto yourself take a look at Barnes and Nobles' Mind, Body, and Spirit section. As you reflect on your career and work, you will definitely be inspired by I Could Do Anything if I Only Knew What It Was: How to Discover What You Really Want and How to Get It. The Sex Section certainly looks interesting, as does Diet and Nutrition.

Researching this brief article was fun but a bit difficult still. I visited a favorite local bookstore last week and I have to say I found it to be much more satisfying. I had definite likes and dislikes in online book-buying. I like visual appeal and warmth as well as the excitement of finding several new and interesting books. Some online stores just didn't grab me. Nonetheless, I do have some favorites based on their ease of use, presentation, book quality, and personal touch. Amazon is still the best and so convenient and easy to use. Borders did a nice job capturing my interest with their lists of subcategories and  new releases. Free Spirit Publishing and Cherry Valley offer a select group of high quality parenting books. I saw many inspirational and life-changing books at these two great Web sites. And, I have to mention a warm and wonderful children's bookstore called Anklebiter's Books. These beautiful books will inspire everyone in the family.
