Parents' Plan for Stress Free Holidays

Tips for December

By Kimberly L. Keith, About.com

My calendar is filling up daily; it's amazing how that happens this time every year. But, I think I have prevented holiday panic with early shopping and planning. We start the season with the Hanging of the Greens service on the first Sunday of Advent. I try to attend church and Christmas musical performances, which to me express the joy of Christmas in a way that Santa Claus and presents never can. I also love spending extra time with friends and family, and champagne on Christmas Eve. Enjoy your special traditions this year and may you be blessed with the love and magic of Christmas.

A Christmas Plan for Parents (December)

  1. The bulk of Santa shopping is done, and all are safe in Santa's secret hiding spot. Spending time in the stores tempts me to buy more for the children, but I am resolute in only picking up stocking stuffers and the adult gifts I need.
  2. Spend your time wisely when searching for hot toys now. Check the toy stores early in the day to catch new shipments that don't even make it to the shelves.
  3. Stress and fatigue can creep up on you. Rest and eat even when you have a million things to do, and you don't think you need it. Make your children get plenty of rest too. A tired, hungry child is no fun.
  4. Plan for temper-free tree decorating. Parents put up the tree and lights, and mom does the basic tree decor. Then, let the little ones help put on the treasured ornaments you gather through the years.
  5. Cooking is always a big part of the holiday season. Potlucks, dinner parties, and family celebrations call for lots of good food. Semi-prepared foods that can be heated and served save time and clean-up in your kitchen. Save your messes for those special treats your family insists that you make.
  6. Browse some quick kids' craft and party ideas for your child's special events and holiday projects.
