Parenting Education

Online Classes for Parents

By Kimberly L. Keith, About.com

Parents can learn new strategies for coping with parenting challenges from the many articles and experts on the Web. I've tried to organize those Web resources so that you can find the specific information you need. But, when a real change is needed in your parenting approach, you know it. Healthy families seek help when they need it. If you need help changing your parenting approach, a structured parenting program will guide you through the process.

Can't make it to a local parenting class? You're in luck, because parenting education on the Web is the next best thing. Check these online parenting classes then sign up for the one that appeals to you.

  • Parenting 101 Online Parent Education Workshop The Child Development Institute site is rich with strategies for effective parenting. Discussions of parent as coach/teacher, behavioral management using rewards and time-outs, and good family communication will inspire you to try a new approach.
  • HELP for Parents Dr. Timothy Dunnigan teaches parents how to use behavioral interventions to improve children's behavior. He teaches each strategy, using lessons and examples, then provides forms to print to help you implement the strategy with your children.
  • Parenting Toolbox for Traditional and Nontraditional Families The Parenting Toolbox is arranged so that you can start with the Hand Tools, jump to the Power Tools, and even consult an Engineer to change your parenting approach and deal with tough child problems.
  • The Responsive Discipline Home Page University Extension publications are great sources for parenting wisdom. Kansas State's Dr. Charles Smith is one of the pioneers in online parenting education with the Responsive Discipline course.
  • Gateway to Active Parenting Online Groups Active Parenting is one of the larger commercial publishers of parent education programs. They bring their expertise to the Web with a fee-based online parenting course that includes Parent Guides and a CD-Rom of the course, a six-week schedule with online interaction with other parents and the course leader. The cost is $59.95, reasonable I say.
  • Dealing With Anger, a LearnWell Online Continuing Education Course A free course in anger management - a vital skill for parents, especially with child discipline problems. The content of the anger management course is excellent, and you might take a look at the course in forgiveness also.

Other sources of parenting education include audio, video, and printed resources. Check out these professional parenting education products and programs to find materials that parents can order.
