Approximately one out of every 25 preschoolers has a vision problem, reports Prevent Blindness America. If left untreated, they may lead to some decrease in the child's sight. One in four school-aged children--across the United States--have a less-severe vision impairment that will require corrective treatment. Here are some things you need to know to protect your child's vision:
The following symptoms may signal a potential eye problem in your child and may warrant a call to your pediatrician:
- Squinting
- Frequent head tilting
- Difficulty discerning colors or objects
- Blurred or double vision
- Discoloration of the eye or surrounding area
- Crossed eyes
- Excessive tearing or discharge from the eye
area
- Film over the eye
- Redness, swelling, or bulging of the eye
- Burning, itchy, or scratchy eyes
- White or discolored pupil
- Unequal pupil size
- Changes in behavior or learning patterns
- Persistent headache
