Pervasive Developmental Disorders

By Kimberly L. Keith, About.com

The diagnostic category pervasive developmental disorders (PDD) refers to a group of disorders characterized by delays in the development of multiple basic functions including socialization and communication. Parents may note symptoms as early as infancy and typically onset is prior to 3 years of age. Symptoms may include communication problems such as using and understanding language; difficulty relating to people, objects, and events; unusual play with toys and other objects; difficulty with changes in routine or familiar surroundings, and repetitive body movements or behavior patterns.

Pervasive Developmental Disorders now encompass a wide spectrum of disabilities, from the severe language deficits and sometimes profound retardation of severe autism to relatively high functioning individuals with these characteristic communication and social difficulties. Genetic and metabolic researchers continue to make great strides in identifying causes, but treatment protocols must be individualized by skilled practitioners to help children develop their potential learning and developmental strengths. Early assessment and treatment and a proactive parental stance will help you find the right course for your child.
