Sports Equipment and Active Toys

Elementary school is the right time for your child to begin to learn a variety of sports games and skills. If you are a sports lover, then start with your favorite sport to open the door to years of fun for you and your child together. If he doesn't take to your favorite sport, don't be critical, just help him find his own sports niche.

Encourage outdoor, active play such as sports as often as possible. Would you rather your child be outdoors playing basketball or inside watching TV? For her health and physical/social/emotional development, regular participation in physical activity is crucial.

If Your Child Doesn't Like Sports

Introduce a variety of physical activities that are fun and non-competitive. Dance, gymnastics, hiking, swimming, backyard games, or martial arts are some options for the child who isn't happy with other organized sports. Even a non-sports lover will enjoy outdoor active toys such as pogo sticks, skates, and bicycles.

Investing in Sports Equipment

When shopping for sports equipment, look to youth sizes for the best fit for your elementary school child. If you are wary about a big investment (such as junior golf clubs) for a sport your child may not play more than a few months, consider buying used from your local classifieds. When your child develops a consistent interest in a sport, buy good youth equipment that will help him build skills and have fun.

You can start very early with plastic golf clubs, t-ball sets, and basketball goals. As your child grows, consider pitching nets, youth balls, and other quality sports training equipment.
