Activities for the Kinesthetic Child

Sports

You will find plenty of opportunities for sports participation for young children in every community. Your child may love team sports such as baseball, football, soccer, hockey, or basketball. But, don't overlook individual sports such as swimming, gymnastics, skiing, skating, tennis, golf, archery, and martial arts. Sports offer a wonderful opportunity to build closeness in your family through shared activities. Perhaps you could help coach your child's team or just be the parent who is always at the ballgames. You might also explore a family membership at a Health Club or take up backpacking as a family activity.

Dance

Many aspects of dance benefit kinesthetic children. Learning complex routines strengthens the mind-body connection and dance builds strong, well-coordinated bodies. My 7-year old, kinesthetic nephew is an incredible dancer (and golfer). I've even seen teenagers learn new steps from him.

Crafts

Are you a kinesthetic also? Then, you will have hours of fun doing crafts with your child. The possibilities are endless but here are some great starting points on the Web for craft ideas.

Cooking

Not just for girls. Your kinesthetic boy will also enjoy this activity that teaches many things - including reading and science.

Computers

Your kinesthetic child is probably the best Super Mario player on the block. He loves video games and computer programs that require fine-motor dexterity and hand-eye coordination. Look for software that utilizes these skills while teaching educational concepts. Programs that use 3D animation and virtual reality are natural leaning tools for him. Another favorite activity of kinesthetic children is chatting online. They get to talk with their hands!

Building and Fixing Things

The feeling of satisfaction and pride your child gains from building and fixing things is priceless. The kinesthetic child is especially adept at this so once she gets started don't be surprised to find appliances, bicycles, even your computer, in various stages of repair!

Make-Believe and Drama

You may have noticed that your kinesthetic child played a lot of make-believe games as a preschooler. Don't let that wonderful imagination become extinguished during the school years. Kinesthetic children will continue to enjoy playing with dolls, playing dress-up, and other imaginative play activities well into elementary school. The natural next step is to involve him in drama activities, even children's theater.
