Child Development - The Seven-Year Old

The Seven-Year Old at Play

By Kimberly L. Keith, About.com

Activities and Interests

The seven-year old prefers two types of play - outdoor play with other children and indoor solitary playtime. His physical abilities have improved and he is good at bicycle riding, sports activities, dancing, and other physically active play skills. He gets tremendous satisfaction from using his good motor skills in play. Seven is a great time to broaden the child's exposure to sports, dance, martial arts, and the like to use his new physical abilities and build a sense of competence in this area.

Because of seven's introverted tendencies, solitary play is also important. They will spend time alone in their room playing with cars, action figures, or dolls. Seven especially enjoys organizing collections of toys or trading cards. This gives them time to think, a sense of possession, and decompression from the frequent fights and arguments in the peer group.

Seven also enjoys playing board and card games with mom or dad. Let her pick the games and take the time to play and bond with your child during family game time.
