The Long View on School Anxiety

My son has a problem with transitions. He's always been this way, and he'll probably always be like this to some extent. I've come to accept it as part of who he is, just as his musical abilities and creative writing talent and loving nature are also traits that make up the whole of my beautiful boy.

When he was an infant, getting him to go to sleep or take naps was a never-ending struggle. As a toddler, when he became focused on a toy or a book or a playdate, he didn't want a good thing to end. And when it came time for preschool and then kindergarten, it was all too much, too new. I think it took several weeks for me to be able to say goodbye without tears (his) and anxiety (both his and mine).

Eventually, and so fast that it seemed to happen in just a few blinks of my eyes, my son grew into a big boy who barely had time for a hug on the steps of his school before he eagerly ran into his building to greet his friends and teachers.

So if you find yourself struggling with your child as she experiences school anxiety at the start of school this year, try to keep a calm and relaxed attitude (it really does help!). And remember that this, too, shall pass all too soon, in a few blinks of your eyes.

Yes some children do outgrow these nervous times but what about the child who every school year it gets worse? My son has been going to some sort of school since he was 2. He did better at 2 than this year when he is going into 3rd grade. What advice do you have for those children and parents?
