Do you practice good green habits around the house like turning off the lights in a room that’s not in use or shutting off the tap while brushing your teeth? Small energy-saving habits like these can save you significant amounts of money on your utility bills.
I have to admit it’s hard to always remember what I should do (I often forget to turn off the power strips around the house when I turn in for the night or leave the house in the morning). But when I saw my son remind his friends to turn off the bathroom light the other day, I realized how much my example is making a difference. (And I resolved to try harder to remember to stick to my green habits.)
Imagine how much we can accomplish if we all try to remember to do what we can to save our resources every day. Together, we can make a big difference in the impact we have on our planet -- and on our wallets.

Instead of throwing the blizzard of paperwork kids bring home from school directly into the recycle bin, I cut the notices in half and use the back side for scrap paper for making lists, math homework, etc.
I found if you don’t cut it in half or mark through the original notice, sometimes it can get confusing. Someone will leave an old notice on the counter that says: “All money for field trip due Tuesday.” And you won’t realize that was from a month ago.
During the summer, you not only pay for the electricity consumed by a light bulb, but you also pay to remove the heat produced by the light bulb. Switching to compact fluorescent light bulbs saves money two ways, because they also put out less heat.
Laureen – good idea. I feel like I’m throwing away a ton of paper! How do you store your newly cut up notes?
As for green tips, we make it a game as to who can turn off the most lights or bring the most recycling. The winner gets to play a card game with a parent alone!
I’m just now getting onboard with a “Green” way of living, due to my oldest (5 yo) calling me on “You’r wasting water, Papa. California doesn’t have a lot.” That lead to a re-look at our diets and we are inching our way toward vegitarian. I’ve had to eat vegi-crow among my peers who know me to not usually be not usually concerned about my carbon footprint. Thanks to my 5 y.o., were living a greener life in more ways than one.
